Payer- or Biller-Centric: Which EIPP Approach Is Best for A/P Depts?
With the Gartner Group estimating that well over half of all invoices will be delivered electronically by 2005, the issue is rapidly moving to the top of most accounts payable agendas. However, electronic invoice presentment and payment (EIPP), is not about the payment, says Hamish Forrest, Harris Bank’s director of e-commerce solutions, dispelling a common myth. It’s about the process. Speaking at IOMA’s Advanced Accounts Payable Institute Forrest described the two basic electronic EIPP models and evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Respondents of the Managing Accounts Payable 2002 Benchmarking Survey indicates they are using the Internet for invoices—to receive them electronically and then to forward them to the appropriate personnel for approvals. This is further evidence that e-invoicing is starting to take hold in corporate America. The survey also revealed several other interesting insights, which lead us to conclude that accounts payable is rapidly changing from a clerical manual function to one that requires research, analysis, and a thorough understanding of the business process.

How Dell�s A/P Dept. Avoided Paper Invoice Deluge From JIT System
Conventional wisdom says just-in-time inventory may be a great concept for a company intent on efficiently managing its stock, but it makes life difficult for the accounts payable department responsible for paying all those just-in-time invoices. Or does it? Consider the example of Dell Computer Company, which found itself ordering certain parts as frequently as 12 times a day. The accounts payable department was inundated with paper invoices. A nifty solution however, was devised for the company by one of its vendors, GE Capital. While GE didn’t pocket one cent of the savings it enabled Dell to find, it reckons that the goodwill it generated will translate into additional sales.
