• A low-level title makes it difficult for a professional to be taken seriously within a company. This, unfortunately, is an issue that haunts many fine accounts payable managers as they struggle to improve their own standing and image within the company. It cascades down on to their staff as well. One of the ways people are judged is by their title. The views of an accounts payable associate are rarely given the same weight as those of the manager. To be on an equal footing within their companies, a small but growing number of accounts payable managers are winning that coveted accounts payable director title. We spoke with a few of them to find out if it made a difference (it does), how they got the title, and what advice they would offer their peers who want to advance within their own companies.

• Skills to Help AP Pros Communicate With the Opposite Gender
• It’s been well documented that men and women communicate in different ways. Numerous books have been written on the topic. The issue, although rarely addressed in accounts payable publications, is especially important to all those professionals who have bosses and subordinates of the opposite sex. Of course, that means virtually everyone. Speaking at the recent NAPCP conference, Kathy DeBoer, former basketball player, winning coach, and now Commissioner of General Services, provided advice on working with and for the opposite sex. Based on her insightful book, Gender and Competition: How Men and Women Approach Work and Play Differently, she presented a clear-cut game plan to help attendees communicate effectively.

• Problem: In the past, explained Emory University’s Thelma Blount at the recent RECAP conference, there was a heavy volume of calls and many complaints. Part of the problem was due to the way the workflow was handled. Each employee was responsible for all the AP work related to a company, starting with a few numbers or letters of the alphabet. And, let’s face it, returning calls to disgruntled vendors is never high on the list of most accounts payable associates.
